Finding your HostID (new)

11/12/2025 . Technical Note

Relevant product(s): Siemens EDA
Operating systems: Windows, Linux
Versions affected: All
Relevant area(s): Licensing

Summary

To obtain licenses for the products you have purchased or are evaluating you need provide us with a suitable HostID.

With the latest versions of FlexLM and Siemens License Server (SLS) a change has been made such that certain dongles and some MAC Addresses are no longer recognised. This Technical Note takes you through the steps to find a suitable new HostID for your Floating and NodeLocked licenses.

Details

A recent update to the FlexLM software means that most dongles are now not recognised by the license server. Siemens are now also enforcing this rule and are changing how HostIDs are selected and used. If you are requesting a new license or are currently using a dongle provided HostID for your Floating / NodeLocked license(s), you will need to use this guide to select a HostID when updating to the latest versions of the License Server software.

Using a MAC Address

You can use the latest version of the FlexLM tools (provided as part of the Siemens License Server software) and the ‘lmutil lmhostid‘ command to obtain a MAC address to be used as a HostID. (This method will also confirm if your dongle continues to be recognised by the license server).

Prerequisites

  • You will need the latest version of the Siemens License Server. You can find and install this by following Step 1 of our guide here – https://www.saros.co.uk/knowledge-base/salt-licensing-windows/
    • It is recommended to uninstall any previous versions of the Siemens License Server software on the machine first

Finding your MAC Address

  1. Navigate to the installation directory of the latest version of the Siemens License Server software e.g. “C:\flexlm”
  2. Open a CMD prompt, and type in the command “lmutil lmhostid“. This will produce an output similar to the below:

C:\flexlm>lmutil lmhostid
lmutil – Copyright (c) 1989-2023 Flexera. All Rights Reserved.
The FlexNet host ID of this machine is “”c396e54ac63e 41a6b8ad2867″”
Only use ONE from the list of hostids.

Please copy one of the HostIDs provided here and provide it to us when requested.

Beware using older versions of the License Server software

Below is an example using an older version of the License Server software:

C:\flexlm>lmutil lmhostid
lmutil – Copyright (c) 1989-2020 Flexera. All Rights Reserved.
The FlexNet host ID of this machine is “”c396e54ac63e 41a6b8ad2867 3c9302565b0f“”
Only use ONE from the list of hostids.

As you can see the older version of the licensing tools includes an additional MAC Address ‘3c9302565b0f‘ in this case. This MAC Address belongs to a dongle which was not recognised by the latest version of the software – a license generated for this MAC address will not work! Please note that the commands “getmac” under Windows and “ifconfig” under Linux will produce similar results to the older versions of the FlexLM tools and can no longer be used to obtain an appropriate MAC Address.
